Sand Extraction and Sand Mining at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes
February 19, 2020

Posted are photographic copies of the Fiji Times Articles published on Wednesday 12 February 2020 in regard to the Sand Extraction operation in the Kulukulu area and the illegal sand extraction activities around the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. The Fiji Government has ceased sand extraction operations in the Kulukulu area, since December 2019.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes are quite a unique landscape and unregulated and illegal sand extraction activities pose a serious threat to the dunes and the residential community on its sheltered side.

The National Trust of Fiji is working with the Fiji Police to curb illegal sand extraction activities along the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park boundary. Anyone found taking/extracting sand from the National Park may be prosecuted.

If you observe any sand extraction activities along the fringes of the dunes including the National Park, please contact the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park on landline: 6520243 or the  Sigatoka Police Station on landline: 6500222. Help us protect a unique Fijian Heritage.
