National Trust of Fiji Conservation Officer Jone Niukula joined representatives from the Department of Environment (DOE) and the Ministry of Information (MOI), on a tour of the Mamanuca islands in early July to conduct interviews of successful community conservation stories.

The Department of Environment team had recently visited three National Trust of Fiji sites on Vanua Levu: Waisali Rainforest Reserve, Nakanacagi Bat Sanctuary and Yadua Taba Iguana Sanctuary.

Last week they travelled west visiting sites in the Malolo District.

Jone and Community Ranger Joeli Vadada were able to share the successful conservation story of captive breeding and invasive eradication on Monuriki Island.

At Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo they toured the Resort’s Tropical Dry Forest Vegetation nursery and captive breeding facility.

‘Fiji’s endemic iguana conservation work continues today and it’s important that people are made aware of the kind of work that’s involved in it’ said Jone.
